Drex - No (need) for an official brazilian currency in digital format

Abstract

This study analyzes the Drex, an acronym for the official Brazilian currency in digital format, currently under construction by BACEN (Brazilian Central Bank). The article takes an approach to digital assets called Cryptoassets, drawing a parallel with a view to identifying advantages and disadvantages in creating a CBDC (acronym designating official currency in digital format issued and guaranteed by the Central Bank of a sovereign country), among the which includes the upcoming Drex. The research methodology used is logical-deductive, whose observation procedure has an exploratory and descriptive character, consisting of documentary and audiovisual media analysis of the BACEN (Brazilian Central Bank) collection, made available on its virtual website on the world wide web, as well as scientific articles on the topic. After going through the topic and its nuances, it is concluded that the creation of Drex, which has one of its intentions to provide new business modalities, has the potential to achieve this. However, there are doubts whether another intention will be achieved, namely, attracting Cryptoactive investors, as the vast majority of them seek anonymization, which will not happen with Drex, to be operated by a state body, specifically a government agency. special nature called Bacen, which will be responsible for issuing and guaranteeing the official Brazilian currency in digital format, as well as registering users/financial operators and operations carried out.
